One of the best perks of my job is bringing home extra flowers after a wedding.
This week those extra flowers were hens and chicks.
I potted some to send back to school with my sister and kept some for myself.
Hens and chicks survive in very shallow dirt and require very little water, an ideal plant for a college dorm (the sister) and someone who often forgets to water plants (me.)
I planted mine in shallow terracotta dishes. Because they require such little soil, I used what was left after we repotted a few plants. But if you want to do it properly, use a cactus soil like this
one (cactus soil is fast draining, which is ideal for cacti and succulents.) Then you just stick the hens and chicks on top, nestling them in a little bit. They root very easily, so its pretty hard to screw up.
I added the little stones because we happened to have a bag of them. And they look prettier than exposed soil.
They only need watering once every two weeks or so if they are indoor plants. I use a small spray bottle rather than a watering can because they react poorly to standing water.
